Early Printing Berleberg Bible Old Testament Psalms 1730 Leather Rare

Massive old Bible: the Berleberg Bible is a German translation of the Bible with copious notes in eight volumes. It is one of the first translations into German after the Luther translation. It was the project of the pietist Johann Friedrich Haug and his brother Johann Jacob Haug. Due to the annotations, this was a massive project and did not have the far-reaching influences of other Bibles due to the size and costs of the printing. This has wooden boards with embossed leather covers: on the front, the design is of rectangles: the center rectangle has something in the center that has been scratched out and a small hole: outside of this, in the next concentric rectangle is a pattern of what look to be baskets and flowers?

With a rectangle above with the initials I F while the rectangle below has 1798in wavy diamond crisscross: the 17 in one diamond, the 98 in the next. The outside rectangle, to the edge of the board, has baskets and flowers repeated. The spine is fairly sturdy with ridges and what looks like, in the second band down, something removed?

With little wavy lines in each band. The back repeats the front without the lettering or numbers. Inside there is a pasted down homemade label with the name and address of a previous owner: on the spare page is a list of names and dates continuing onto the opposite. Wonderful chapter heading decorations and capitals. Foxing throughout and age appropriate paper discoloration.

Great watermark on back spare repeated on back pastedown. Clasps are absent except for one back but nails are present.

Leather is cracked and chipped especially at the edges. Edges of block are black and blue. Acceptable Condition: Folio: (14 X 9 1/4 X 5 1/2): embossed leather over wood: split at bottom and top on both front and back but all pieces presentlooks like age-related dryness: spine is solid with scratch/problem in second band down: writing inside with bookplate on front board and names on first spare to next: Der Heiligen Schrifft und iwar Alten Testaments, Dritter Sheil: Ramlich die Bucher Siob/die Psalmen David's Und Anderer geistreicher manner und die dren Bucher Calomons et al: Gebrudt zu Berlenburg: 1730.
